St. Paul’s revered Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band will wrap up a yearlong celebration of its 50th anniversary with an all-day celebration that will also feature the release of its second CD, which includes tracks by both the full band and a variety of side projects featuring band members.
Events begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Shamrock’s Irish Nook on St. Paul’s West End. The day will feature performances by such local groups as the Hounds of Finn, Langer’s Ball, Sweet Colleens, Tim Malloys, and Tom Dahill as well as the pipe band. A traditional session, spontaneous performances by an ever-changing collection of players, will also take place during the day, and – in true Irish fashion – any number of "surprise" performers is sure to appear.
Founded in 1962 by four enthusiastic young pipers, the band can claim more than 100 members through the years. Its mission is to encourage and support the preservation of the Irish arts of piping, drumming and dancing. The band – in its distinctive black and saffron uniforms – is a crowd favorite at community celebrations, parades and other events around the Midwest, including St. Paul’s renowned St. Patrick’s Day celebration, the Irish Fair of Minnesota, the Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games, and numerous parades and festivals from Aberdeen, S.D., to Emmetsburg, Iowa.
Admission to the celebration is $5, kids under 12 free; a variety of band merchandise – including copies of the new CD – will be available to purchase.
Celebration Highlights:
- Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band 50th CD release concert.
- Three music stages, outdoor tent, and traditional Irish session.
- Brian Boru Brew - 50th Anniversary Beer - Specially produced by Mankato Brewery.
- Anniversary Special - 50th & 40th Anniversary CDs, and a Pint of the Brian Boru Brew - $10

Calling all Irish trad musicians, dancers, story tellers and the gathered masses…
The Irish Music and Dance Association and the Great Northern Irish Pipers Club present ——> Open Mic Night at the Celtic Junction!
After the great turn-out and success of the April Open Mic Fund-raising event for the GNIPC, we decided it would be great to have a non-fundraiser Open Mic Night on a semi-regular basis, as a way to provide the opportunity to local performers to show off their skills! GNIPC has teamed up with the IMDA to make this happen.
Never played on stage before? Got a new piece you’ve worked up and Want to try out? Here’s your chance before a sympathetic crowd! Come show your support for our wonderfully talented local celticmusicians and dancers and bring your instruments/voices/dancing shoes/what have you.
It is five bucks to get in the door. We may be selling light beverages and some snacky type stuff, but if you want anything else, you should bring your own.
Walk-ups are welcome but we highly recommend you to sign up early, contact Patrick Cole . You can also sign up with Pat McCormick.

The Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band is looking for practice space, approximately 3,000 square feet to 5,000 square feet . Our current Irish Rose Warehouse in West St. Paul is relocating to a much smaller 'shared-space' building. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We need a place that is available one evening a week, preferably Tuesdays, until 9:00pm. Ideally, there will be multiple rooms, space to play the bagpipes outside, and in an area where we can play until 9:00pm without disturbing others. If you know of a good place in St. Paul or Minneapolis, please let us know.

Kieran's Pub Opening Day Festivities (from www.finnegans.org )
Tuesday, March 16, 2010
If you haven't heard, Kieran's Irish Pub has taken over the space formerly occupied by Bellanote in Block E. They'll be opening for business in their new digs on March 16 (in time for St. Patrick's Day fun), but they're going to be doing it in fine style. Check it out:
- 2:00pm — Kieran's opens in the old location on 2nd Avenue & 4th Street. They'll be serving pints only and will be taking donations for the Make-A-Wish child they're sponsoring to go to the World Cup this summer in South Africa.
- 3:30pm — The last pint of FINNEGANS to be poured by Alice the bartender at the old location will be auctioned off. The winner gets to enjoy the final pint while Kieran himself does the toast.
- ~3:45pm — We adjourn to the patio out front and witness Kieran locking the doors for the last time. We'll then parade down 4th Street, to Nicollet Mall, to 6th Street, and on to Block E, lead by the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band.
- ~4:00pm — Kieran's opens in it's new location in Block E. The party will continue until 2am with live music from the Wild Colonial Bhoys and St. Dominic's Trio, dancing, toasts, and all things Irish.
Join us for the biggest St. Patrick's Day kick-off this city has seen!

Tim Fitzgerald was proud of his Irish roots

Tim Fitzgerald was a humble man perfectly comfortable being in the background, but he stood at the center of Irish culture in the Twin Cities.
Though he serenaded customers at Kieran's Irish Pub in Minneapolis with song and awed them when he played his bagpipes, "Fitz," as he was known, spent most of his time investing in local Irish musicians and bands and giving them a place to play. He had booked acts at Kieran's for the past 15 years and lined up entertainment for the Irish Fair of Minnesota.
"My two bands probably would not exist if it weren't for him," said Terry Walsh of the Belfast Cowboys and St. Dominic's Trio. "He put us to work and came through with gigs."
Fitzgerald, 47, of St. Paul, died March 3 in his sleep.
After graduating from Minneapolis Southwest High School, Fitzgerald quickly became a key part of Irish-American culture in St. Paul. At Christmas he donned a green Santa suit and blew his bagpipes outside Irish on Grand, and he performed at weddings, funerals and other special events, such as St. Patrick's Day. He was on the board of the Irish Fair of Minnesota for nine years and helped the annual summer festival grow from a small fête to one that now attracts about 100,000 people and top musicians to Harriet Island in St. Paul.
"He was the kingpin," said longtime friend John Dingley, who hired Fitzgerald in the mid-1990s to coordinate music at the former Irish Well, a pub Dingley ran on University Avenue.
Fitzgerald was a member of the Emerald Society and of the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band. He also was a friend of many bands and booked them at places such as the Liffy, the Half Time Rec and other Irish outlets.
"He was an integral part of everything Irish that took place in this community," said Kieran Folliard, owner of Kieran's Irish Pub, which is moving to its new space on Block E later this month.
Fitzgerald's talents went far beyond music. He was computer-savvy, an excellent photographer and website designer, and a skilled craftsman and artist, friends said.
He rarely turned down anybody who asked for a favor. On the day before he died, he used his truck and trailer to help move furniture to the new Kieran's, helped with another construction project, played his bagpipes and sang at a wake, then returned to the new Kieran's to check that the newly sealed floor would pass inspection, Dingley said.
Fitzgerald is survived by his father, Gerald, of Eagan; his mother, Gretchen Fitzgerald, of Hopkins; a sister, Kathleen Fitzgerald, of Hopkins, and a brother, Richard, of Bloomington.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Thomson-Dougherty Mansion, 2535 Park Av. S., Minneapolis. A gathering of friends and family will begin at 3 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held after the service at Kieran's Irish Pub, 330 2nd Av. S., Minneapolis.
